The cap at a slant; the eyepatch; or the look in his eye. Or simply the genius of Cecil Beaton. Whatever it is, this is a striking picture.
The soldier is Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart, (1880-1963). Serving in the Boer War, and both World Wars, he lost the eye, and his left hand.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1916, and this image forms part of London’s National Portrait Gallery exhibition of VC recipients.
